Weighing the Risks and Benefits of Virtual Machines

Furthermore, because offline VMs are not kept up to date with security patches, they pose risks when they are brought back online.
Out of control VM sprawl: Virtual machines are frequently used to provide independent development and testing environments because they make it simple to create new servers. Businesses can easily end up with a large number of VMs that cannot be effectively managed, monitored, or maintained.
Protecting Virtual Machines
The risks introduced by virtual machines can be mitigated by employing appropriate monitoring and management tools, as well as procedures similar to those used to protect physical servers. Some other steps to be considered are:

- Any previously disabled accounts must be re-enabled if a roll back occurs. If a virtual machine is rolled back to fix a corrupt image, all updates must be re-patched to the most recent updates.
Finally, while virtual machines have many advantages, they also pose security risks that must be considered. Before deciding whether or not to use virtual machines, businesses must weigh the risks and benefits. However, with the proper security measures in place, virtual machines can be used safely and securely.
